Freightliner started offering Thomas Built C2 school buses with DD5 Detroit Diesel engines in 2018. The engine is expected to be available as an option in buses through 2027. Most people automatically associate the Freightliner buses with the popular Cummins ISB 6.7L engine. Although Cummins is by far the most popular option, its important to explore the DD5 engine as there are several thousand buses on the road which are equipped with the DD5 engine.
Diesel Pro is a Fuel Injection system specialist, so naturally we will focus on the fuel system of this engine. The engine is branded Detroit Diesel, but it is actually a Mercedes Benz OM934 Tier 4 engine. Mercedes chose to partner with Delphi on the fuel system for this engine. Delphi’s components on this engine include:
- Fuel Injector – Delphi Smart Injector (Managed)
- High Pressure Fuel Rail – Including the rail pressure sensor and pressure relief solenoid valve
- Fuel Injection Pump – A DFP5 model Delphi Pump with 2 pumping elements to support the 4 Cylinder engine
The smart injector works in conjunction with the DFP5 pump to deliver precise amounts of fuel to each cylinder allowing optimal emissions control while maintaining appropriate performance and overall engine balance. Keep in mind these injectors are trim coded and the code must be updated within the ECM when installing replacement injectors.
Diesel Pro recently released these products to our network. Below is a listing of items we currently offer for this engine. Check out the flyer HERE
